Ello.co : A welcome change to the social media landscape

So there's this new social media thing. The "anti-facebook" out there in the virtual space. It is calling to all to join and not letting anyone join at the same time.  The elite, those with the coveted golden ticket can enter and partake on the newest social media site.  The Ello.co site is invite only while it is in beta testing.  I was fortunate enough to be able to access through someone in one of my Google+ circles (see Google+ is good for something :)).  I had a slight bit of difficulty entering the site because I was granted an invite, but just one I had to type in myself not the actual formal email invite.  So because I was trying to login using the regular ello.co site, and not the ello.co/join site, I had some issues BUT eventually we figured it all out and I was in. I soon discovered that I did not have the 25 invites that were once available.  This may have been because their server was down for a bit.  Virtually hundreds and hundreds of peo...

Robin Williams is Gone and why that's NOT O.K.

It has taken me quite some time to think about what if anything I wanted to express in my blog about the loss of actor Robin Williams. People die every second of every day, and I hardly bat an eye. I don't know them nor have I ever known their life stories. They are just people. Their lives are special to the ones that loved them. I hardly bat a eye as I know that there is nothing that I could have possibly done to save them. Death is a part of life. Wait, let me rephrase that, natural death is a part of life. Suicide on the other hand is not. It is something that I cannot comprehend. I don't understand the dark place in someone's mind and heart that suicide resides in. It is selfish. It is brutal, raw, and so unforgiving to those left behind. Suicide is not fair play. I think that is why I had such a hard time trying to wrap my head around the death of Robin Williams. The SUICIDE OF ROBIN WILLIAMS! Words left me after I heard the news, I was literally speechless and felt...

The Scariest Thing I've Ever Done: Telling my friends I was homeless

So, the other day I was reading through my usual social media outlets and catching up on the news.  I stumbled upon a post by Arianna Huffington where she was asking people what their " Wake Up Call " moments in their lives were.  She solicited stories from people and in exchange would select a few to receive a copy of her new book THRIVE: The Third Metric To Redefining Success And Creating A Life of Well Being, Wisdom, and Wonder.   I submitted my wake up call, not thinking anything would come of it but scared to death because what I told her in my story I had never told more than a few people about.  As soon as I finished my article and hit the send button on that email I knew only two things.  1. That I had just told the potential world that I and my family were homeless a couple of years ago, and 2. That admission was scary as hell.  There are many in the world that are quick to pass judgement on others and I had spent the last 2 years reading all of...

Social Healing- The use of social media for the greater good

Very recently a friend that I have known since the 8th grade died suddenly of a heart attack.  He was 36. Two years younger than I am.  I live in a different city than he does, yet I was almost instantly made aware of the situation through friends that live in our hometown.  Facebook brought all of us together again and our friends death created a call to action.  Over the course of a few days, I learned a few things I had missed about his life.  He had lost his job and was looking for another one.  He had a family and aside from the job loss appeared to be doing alright.  That's why it was such a shock to all of us when we discovered his passing.  One of his best friends from childhood, wanted to do something to help his family cope with the sudden loss.  Another friend suggested setting up a bank account in his name...but another suggested using fundrazr.com to start a funeral tribute fund for his family to cover funeral expenses...

Building a Network...a what?

In this time of digital growth many of us hear different terms being thrown around the social media landscape.  Words like SEO, SEM and we often hear the term " building your network ".  Network .  What does that mean exactly?  What is a network and how does one go about building one online? A network is built from connections with people.  Those connections, those bonds can be through any means of socialization.  Pre social media networks were built by utilizing friends and family or even strangers that you struck up a conversation with. In small towns and tight knit communities, it is often through these networks that bring to mind the phrase "small world" as discoveries of mutual connections are made.  With the advent of social media building a network has never been easier.  It has allowed social butterflies to further extend their reach and present themselves to others in the world and expand their network.  For those i...

New Year, New Promise

Well as I sit here listening to all of the illegal fireworks going off in my neighborhood and then the rain that has begun to fall...I can't help but think about all of the things that have come out of the crap that was 2012. On a personal level...This past year has been such a struggle for my family that I could not wait for the new year to arrive. The past it just that, the past. So in 2013, I look forward to promising events to take place that will propel my personal enrichment forward as well as uplift those around me to a new level of energy, love and prosperity. Being so close to the ground, one can only go up. Positive vibes, promising career options, and always love for my fellow man shall bring fantastic things in the coming year. I wish you all the best...and then some in 2013, I mean we've already all defied the predicted death of our planet right? That's one hurdle crossed...the rest should be cake. HAPPY NEW YEAR!
